Anna Clayden

Partner, Data Privacy

I’ve joined Clayden Law from 17 years as in-house Counsel at BP, where I specialised in data privacy for approximately eight years. Whilst there, I advised on a wide range of data privacy issues, from advising on the General Data Protection Regulation, negotiating global data privacy terms and conditions, carrying out data protection audits, advising on the privacy aspects of marketing campaigns, through to handling cross border data transfer issues including EU Standard Contractual Clauses and Binding Corporate Rules.

Anna completed her training contract at leading multi-national firm, Ashursts, before spending three years specialising in employment law.  In 2000 she joined BP as in-house employment counsel before moving to senior data privacy counsel in 2009.

During her time at BP, Anna advised on a wide range of data privacy issues, in particular advising on implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation, negotiating global data privacy terms and conditions, carrying out data protection audits, advising on privacy aspects of marketing campaigns and apps, privacy policies, record retention issues, cloud computing and cross border data transfer issues. Anna was a key player in BP’s application for approval of its Binding Corporate Rules which were approved by the ICO in 2010.  In addition, she carried out data privacy training across the organisation.

Anna will be advising Clayden Law’s clients on all areas including, implementation of the GDPR and ongoing data privacy compliance issues, negotiation of global data privacy terms and conditions, as well as advising on cross border data transfer issues including the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and Binding Corporate Rules.  In particular Anna will be bringing insight into the data privacy aspects relevant to ‘big data’, handling data breach response and resolution, as well as data matters relating to cloud computing and app launches. Other areas of work will include carrying out data protection audits, handling data breach response and resolution, drafting data protection notices and policies, handling complicated Subject Access Requests, employee monitoring and training, as well as the development of internal data protection guidance, playbooks and training.

Anna spends a lot of her spare time looking after her 3 children but is also a keen tennis player.
